How To Stick To Your Fitness Plan

Starting a new fitness plan is always an exciting time in your life – it's easy to look forward to slimming down, toning up, and feeling better about yourself. After the initial push of excitement, however, you may find that sticking to your new fitness plan proves difficult: once the day-to-day routine sets in, it can be harder and harder to find the motivation and discipline you need to stick to your pan. We’re here to help! In this article, we’ll give you some great tips for sticking to your fitness plan.

  1. Start small. When you’re new to working out, it can be tempting to dive in head first – after all, this journey is an exciting one! Resist the urge to do too much too soon, however, both to ensure that you don’t get injured and to help you stick to your program. Instead of trying to do everything the pros do the first day or week or month, start small and give your body time to adjust. Your body will thank you for it a few months done the road when you’re limber, lean, and injury-free!
  2. Set realistic goals. Training to run a marathon may sound like a great goal, but it’s not realistic or healthy for someone brand new to exercise. Remember to set realistic goals – try training for a 5K or setting a different exercise-related goal that you know is challenging, but still attainable. For example, maybe you can set a simple goal of getting on the elliptical for 45 minutes a day, three times a week. Having a goal like this will motivate you and push you to work harder, without overdoing it.
  3. Create healthy habits. Make it easy for yourself to workout: try to workout at the same time every day, always carry a gym bag in your car so you don’t have an excuse to skip your workout, and have water with you at all times to help curb your junk food cravings. Set yourself up for success – you’ll be glad you did!
  4. Bring a friend. Having an accountability partner will ensure that you get to the gym those days when you really don’t feel like it – plus, it can be so much more fun to have a pal to chat with while working through your fitness journey! Try recruiting a friend to join you, and you’ll both be more likely to stick to your fitness plan.
  5. Celebrate small victories. Remember that fitness is a journey – and every single victory should be celebrated! Dropping your mile time by a few seconds, or being able to lift five pounds more than you could last month, or losing a pound – all of these things should be celebrated – and if you remember to praise your victories, you’ll be more likely to stick with your fitness plan in the future!

Remember: with any fitness journey, consistency is key: the only thing that will make a difference is whether you stick to it! Using these tips will help you ensure that you keep up with your workout routine and create strong, positive habits for long-term success!
